Terrific Time in Toronto

SITTING ON THE shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is a popular spot for tourists. With shopping, nightlife, galleries, museums, parks and the great Canadian outdoors never far away, there is something please most visitors.

EAT & SHOP

There are malls galore – Toronto has real winters & summers so has plenty of heated and air conditioned spaces with shops of all sizes for all tastes. There’s no shortage of reasonably priced good quality eateries around town, (though less pizzas would have been welcome!)

THE ISLANDS

You can take a breather from city life with a quick ferry trip across the Lake to Centre Island - beautiful parkland, and discreet amusement park (and pizza takeaways) or beach if you fancy a BBQ.

MUSEUMS & GALLERIES

Jurassic Park, eat your heart out.  The Royal Ontario Museum had the most comprehensive, extensive display of dinosaur skeletons you’ll see anywhere.  If you prefer to touch and not just look, the Ontario Science Museum is the place to go. There was the hair-raising (literally) experience of a Van Der Graaf generator before we landed on Mars in the Imax cinema.

BLACK CREEK PIONEER VILLAGE

One of our favourites, this working ‘museum’ is a small town of the kind Canada’s first European settlers would have built.  Watermill, homes, shops, school and the blacksmiths are all brought to life by costumed settlers happy to demonstrate how it all works.

OUT & ABOUT

Toronto is a spacious wide city on a North American scale that we in the Old Worlde don’t often experience.  After the ear-popping ride up the lift, you can drink in the views from the top of the CN Tower, or enjoy the vertigo-inducing sensation of walking gingerly along the section of glass floor.

NIAGARA

However many pictures you see of this tourist attraction, the Falls are simply breathtaking with tons of water thundering over every minute and crashing onto the rocks below. A couple of hours outside Toronto, there is an entire resort built nearby and many angles to see the Falls. We took a trip on the Maid of the Mist, the boat which takes you to the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, got a fantastic view – and came back soaked from the spray.

SOMEWHERE TO STAY
We stayed Downtown, at the Delta Chelsea, a few minutes walk from the Subway, the Eaton Centre mall.  It is a good choice for an easy stay or the independent traveller – swimming pool, kids club, laundry facilities and a choice of dining rooms.  Good food at reasonable price, a huge choice of coffees …and only the occasional pizza.
