Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club 2014 Season Review
By Phil Vose
Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club enjoyed an excellent 2014 season with the highlight being the 1st team's promotion to Division 6 of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. Unfortunately, the 2nd team did not fare so well suffering relegation from Division 8.
The 1st team had a fabulous year finishing 2nd in Division 7 West of the new Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. They ended the season by winning 15 out of their 20 matches, collecting 449 points, and finishing 2nd to Asian Sports. The first XI won promotion in their final game at Loughborough Greenfields 2, winning by 9 wickets. The team were led fantastically by young captain, Joe Harris in his first season as skipper.
The key to the 1st team's brilliant season was the magnificent bowling attack with 10 opposing teams being bowled out for less than 100. The bowlers were led by Anil Revu and Chamika Mewan with both men taking 43 wickets throughout the season. They were also backed up by Kumara Sanira and Joe Harris. Anil and Chamika both took 5 wickets at least once in an innings and the best individual contribution must surely go to Anil as he took 4 wickets in one over against Broughton Astley.
The batsmen also made some key contributions, with Anoop Jayaraj and Sahan Tharanga each scoring centuries. In fact, Anoop had a stunning season scoring 837 runs in total at an average of 49.23. Sahan also scored 572 valuable runs. Half centuries were also scored by Charlie Wilkes, Anil Revu, John Wright and Luisha Perera to greatly boost the team's batting totals.
So, the 1st team will look forward to 2015 playing in Division 6, where they will no doubt find it a bit tougher next season but will do their upmost to hopefully be celebrating again at the end of 2015.
The 2nd team endured a disappointing season finishing 2nd from bottom in Division 8 West. They ended the season with 170 points and finished 20 points adrift of Hathern Old 2 after losing their final match of the season to Hathern by 67 runs. Unfortunately, the second XI only won 3 matches out of 18 in 2014. The main reason for the poor season was due to some below average batting displays, although, captain, Charlie Wilkes and Jim Pike both contributed with a half century. Anil Revu in a rare appearance for the 2nd team scored a wonderful century too. The 2nd team will hope for an improved 2015 playing in Division 9.
The friendly Sunday team made a reappearance towards the end of the season playing 4 matches in the end and they will hopefully be playing with greater regularity in 2015. The club also took part in the Cliffe Wright Cup losing narrowly in the final to Cropston. Anstey and Glenfield were well led by their committee, with the groundsmen also preparing a fantastic ground with which to play on.
The club hosted their AGM and presentation evening on Sunday 16th November with the main winners being as follows:
Club Person of the Year: Amanda Wilkes
Young Club Person of the Year: Joe Harris
Top Batsmen (most runs): Anoop Jayaraj with 837 runs
Top Bowlers (most wickets): Anil Revu/Chamika Mewan with 43 wickets each
