Mixed fortunes

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have started the 2015 season and had mixed fortunes to date. The first team play in Division 6 West and the second team participate in Division 8 West. Both teams will be looking to consolidate their positions in both divisions and look forward to some competitive cricket ahead.
The first team have had a difficult start to life in Division 6 West following last year's promotion, where they have been hit by a few injuries. They have been involved in some very competitive matches with their only victory to date coming again Walton. However, they were extremely unlucky against Appleby Magna and UT XI when they lost by 1 wicket and 5 runs respectively. The bowlers have been led brilliantly by Chamilka Mewan, who has so far had 2 five wicket hauls and notched nearly 20 wickets – a fantastic effort! They will be hoping for improved fortunes over the next few weeks.
The second team will be hoping to improve on last year's disappointing campaign when they finished 9th in Division 8 West. The second XI to date had a difficult first match against Loughborough University Staff losing by 86 runs, have achieved a victory against Aryans and a closely fought defeat against Fatana. Positive results will be sought throughout the first half of the season.
The playing side of the club has been strengthened during the winter and at the beginning of this season with opening batsman Ravi Maharajan, bowler Nilesh Patel and Abbas Khan all joining the club. The club have been training at Beaumont Leys School during the off season and some of this practice has been vital in preparing the players for the summer months.
The first Sunday friendly of the year is due to take place on 7th June with the club also taking part in the Twenty20 County Shield. Other friendly matches will be taking place later in the season and the club are hosting a limited overs tournament on Sunday 19th July involving Asian Sports, Gracedieu Park and Appleby Magna.
During the winter, the players have been attending nets at Beaumont Leys School and some of the club members have been working down at the ground helping to prepare it for the new season. The ground is in an excellent state thanks to the efforts of our hard working ground staff.
If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda's email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We are also now hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground on Wednesdays from 5.30pm, so if you're interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice.
