Blaby residents among most active

A survey carried out by Sport England has revealed that residents of Blaby District are amongst the most active in the country.
The results, taken for all 326 local authorities within England, reveal that the district has the 16th highest rate of people aged over 16 who participate in sport of moderate intensity at least once a week with 44.1% of people taking part in their favourite sport.
Sport England's figures mean the district has the highest participation rate in Leicestershire, and a number that is nearly 10% higher than the regional average, highlighting how residents have excelled in sports participation. Comparisons to figures from 2005 show an increase in 8.3% in Blaby District, the eighth largest increase nationally.
With a strong sporting network through the Blaby District Local Sports Alliance, local partners have ensured that sport and physical activity is accessible for everyone by improving sports facilities, encouraging the development of volunteers and coaches and delivering sports opportunities in their communities.
Councillor Sheila Scott, Portfolio Holder for Health and Leisure, said: "Not only is it fantastic to be ranked in the top five percent in the country and the best in the county, but to know that so many of our residents are active is great news.
"I hope in ten years' time the increase will be even greater as more people enjoy sport and exercise, and the health benefits that come with it."
