Cricket streak!

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have started the 2016 season and had mixed fortunes to date. The first team play in Division 6 West and the second team participate in Division 8 West. Both teams will be looking to consolidate their positions in both divisions and look forward to some competitive cricket ahead.
The first team didn't start the season so well with defeats against Sapcote and Broughton Astley. However, in recent weeks they have started to climb the table with convincing victories against Barwell 2 and Broomleys 2. They have also secured winning draws against Loughborough Carillion 2 and Birstall Village 2. The bowlers have been led brilliantly again by Chamilka Mewan, who has so far notched over 10 wickets with Rob Charles and Charlie Wilkes taking 5 wicket hauls. The batsmen have also been firing led brilliantly by captain, Anoop Jayaraj who scored a fantastic century at Loughborough Carilion 2. Anoop has also scored 2 half centuries and has been assisted by 50's from James Ogle and Kiran Nair. They will be hoping to maintain the winning results over the next few weeks.
The second team will be hoping to remain competitive in Division 8 West. The second XI to date have had a challenging start to the season with some tough competition in their division. Captain Charlie Wilkes has led the way and already taken over 20 wickets this season which is a brilliant effort. The team have earned 2 victories to date against Huncote 2 and Leicester Community Sports Cricket Academy and also gained a winning draw versus Shepshed 2. Positive results will be sought throughout the rest of the season.
The first Sunday friendly of the year took place on 22nd May at Countesthorpe with a close fought victory and there are other matches scheduled over the next month or two. The club were defending their Twenty20 County Shield this season and in the first round were drawn to face Asian Sports. The team put up a brave fight but lost a close fought battle. The club are hosting their annual Presidents Day on Sunday 14th August which will involve a limited overs tournament with 3 other local teams and there will be some off field activities too.
During the winter, the players attended nets at Beaumont Leys School and some of the club members have been working down at the ground to ensure that some excellent wickets have been prepared. The ground is in a fabulous shape thanks to the efforts of our hard working ground staff.
If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda's email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We are hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground on Wednesdays from 5.30pm, so if you're interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice.
