Cricket season review

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have enjoyed a good 2016 season with both the 1st and 2nd teams finished the season above mid table in their respective divisions. There was some brilliant individual performances but overall it was fantastic team effort by everyone which meant that the club continued to move forward.
The 1st team had a great year in Division 6 West. They finished 3rd in the table winning 10 matches and completing the season with an excellent 419 points. The team only lost 3 times and were only a few points away from finishing in the top 2 and promotion to Division 5.
There were some brilliant individual performances this year with Anoop Jayaraj again coming out top of the batting charts scoring a superb 800 runs – this included 5 half centuries and a magnificent 113 not out against Loughborough Carillion 2. Vishwanath Parmar was also important towards the team's success and he scored a superb 100 not out at Barwell 2. Half centuries were also scored by James Ogle, Ravi Maharajan, Soyeb Patel and Kiran Nair.
The bowlers struggled a little compared to previous seasons with the leading wicket taker being all-rounder Vishwanath Parmar taking 24 wickets. Others making useful contributions included Charlie Wilkes, Chemika Mewan, Robert Charles, Ravi Maharajan and Ajay Revu.
The 1st team will look forward to 2017 and hopefully push for promotion to Division 5.
The 2nd team enjoyed a decent season too finishing 5th in Division 8 West. They ended the season with 269 points and won 7 of their matches. Top run scorer for the seconds was Jim Pike with 303 runs closely Jon Hartwell with 256 runs. Half centuries were scored by Jim Pike, Charlie Wilkes and Bruce Smith. This season's leading bowlers were Charlie Wilkes (25 wickets) and Jim Pike (22 wickets). Harmeet Riyat and Darren Morris both achieved 5 wicket hauls. The 2nd XI will be looking to boost their ranks for next year and push further up the league.
The friendly Sunday team played a few matches during the season including matches against Countesthorpe, Leicester University Staff and Gracedieu Park and they will be hoping to play a greater amount of matches next year.
The club also hosted its Annual Presidents Open Day with Appleby Magna, Braunstone and Gracedieu Park joining Anstey and Glenfield for a brilliant day's cricket. The final was won by Gracedieu Park but it was a fantastic day for the club with numerous off field activities taking place too.
The end of season ground work has taken place which should mean that next season's pitches are in decent shape. The club are also looking at improving the square, enhancing the equipment and extending their storage facilities in the off season.
The club are hosting their AGM and presentation evening on Sunday 20th November from 6pm at the Gynsill Lane Sports Ground Pavilion and Winter Nets will commence on in the New Year.
Anstey and Glenfield are actively looking for any new players to join the club for the 2017 season, so if you are interested in being involved then please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes at amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com.
