Think Jessica campaign

'Think Jessica' by Nisha Chanderana.
Jessica's story was tragic. She was one of an increasing number of people worldwide who became a victim to fraudsters and criminals over a period of five years and despite her family's efforts, she refused to believe that she was being conned. She spent her life waiting for the promised rewards after handing over every penny she had. Approximately 30,000 scam letters were removed from her home after she died in 2007.
Criminals worldwide are hunting down the most vulnerable people in society and once conned for the first time, their details are sold on as so-called 'suckers' lists to others, earning these criminals an estimated £10 billion a year.
The Think Jessica campaign was started by Jessica's daughter Marylyn in 2007 after five years of struggling to find help for her mother. Her aim was to educate others about the powerful psychology criminals use to trap their victims. Think Jessica is now a registered charity supported by countless agencies, organisations and police forces nationwide and is committed to making people aware of the danger and financial implications caused by postal and telephone scams, educating professionals and protecting the most vulnerable members of our society from illegal practices.
Nisha's talk was very informative but also unsettling at times. Members openly shared their own stories and it made us realise that no-one is completely safe from these criminal practices. If you need further information, there is plenty of useful advice on the 'Think Jessica' website or contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau if you need to talk to someone.
