Cricket season preview

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club are looking forward to starting the new cricket season in April in the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. The first team will be participating in Division 5 West after narrowly losing out on promotion last season and the second team will be played in Division 7 West after finishing 2nd in Division 8 in 2017.
Joe Harris has returned as captain for the first team taking over from prolific batsman, Anoop Jayaraj. The first XI finished in 4th last season and in the end were very unlucky to not gain promotion to Division 4. In 2018 they will be welcoming teams like Cropston 2, Hathern Old and Market Bosworth down at the Gynsills Lane ground. Anoop Jayaraj will be looking to emulate his outstanding 1,103 runs from last year and the bowlers hoping to top the averages. The first team started their 2018 season away to Gracedieu Park on Saturday 28th April with their first home match on 5th May against Ibstock Town 2.
The second team captaincy has been taken over by Bradley Wells. The second XI will be looking to continue their form from last year's excellent campaign when they gained promotion from Division 8 West. They have several new teams to play this season with matches against Broomleys 2, Mahers and Barrow Town 3 to look forward to. The second XI commenced their matches with a home match against Braunstone on 28th April.
Both teams will be hoping to have a successful season. In addition, the club have also entered the Twenty20 County Shield and the club have joined a local Sunday friendly league which will include matches against teams like Earl Shilton, Electricity Sports and Dunton Bassett. If anyone would like to attend any fixture, then everyone is welcome to come down and watch a few hours cricket – there is a match every Saturday afternoon from late April to the end of August.
The club are hosting the All Stars Cricket Programme which is aimed at providing youngsters aged from five to eight their first experience of cricket. The sessions start on 12th May from 10.30am and it will be great to see many children attending to continue the success of last year's sessions. The club are looking to grow their junior section over the next few years and this is a great initiative to get involved in. If you would like to attend then please register via our website.
Anstey and Glenfield CC have gained support from some local sponsors during the last few months. The new sponsors are GAP Property Services and Dale Studios and they join Langton Butchers in backing the club over the forthcoming year. The sponsors will be proudly displayed on the club's new playing shirts.
During the winter, the players have been attending nets using the fantastic facilities at the City Cricket Academy which is at Freemans Common and some of the club members have been working down at the ground helping to prepare it for the new season. We have fantastic facilities down at the ground led by our hard-working groundsman, Jon Hartwell and we are extremely thankful to everyone involved for all their hard work. The 2018 season was delayed by a week due to the poor weather we have been experiencing over the late Winter/early Spring period but was due to start on 28th April.
We are looking for new players of any age or ability, so, if you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda's email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We will be hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsils Lane ground on Wednesday evenings during the season, so if you're interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice.
