Flying a flag

Year Four children from The Hall attended the 'Flying a Flag' ceremony for our Armed Forces at Leicestershire County Council. It took place by the 'standing easy' memorial and was attended by both the Chairman of the County Council, Mr Ozzy O'Shea and HM Lord-Lieutenant, Mike Kapur OBE, along with veterans and representatives from the armed forces. Two pupils read an extract from a Michael Morpurgo Book called Private Peaceful which is a novel written for children about the experiences of a soldier in WW1. Afterwards refreshments were served in the member's lounge and the pupils had the opportunity to chat and ask questions with the veterans. It was a lovely occasion where memories were shared and the children learnt first had how to appreciate the sacrifice made by the older generation. As one veteran commented, "It's so refreshing to see the younger generation so eager to learn about the past."
