The real Wallis Simpson

We were treated to a fascinating talk about the famous Wallis Simpson by Julie Ede at our April WI meeting. Julie, who is a superb speaker gave a brilliant account of Wallis Simpson, an American socialite, from her birth in 1896 to her marriage to our ex monarch Edward Vlll in 1937.
Wallis's father died soon after she was born and she and her mother relied heavily on the support of their wealthy relatives. Her first marriage was to a naval officer, Win Spencer but after long periods of separation due to his career and his excessive drinking, it ended in divorce. It was during her second marriage to Ernest Simpson that she met Prince Edward and it was after he became king that she divorced again in order to marry him. Edward's desire to marry the twice divorced Wallis almost caused a constitutional crisis and as no satisfactory solution could be agreed by the government of the day, Edward abdicated his throne to marry her. Such was his love for her, Edward continued to shower Wallis with money and fabulous jewels throughout their married life and they lived a very lavish lifestyle as celebrities in Europe and America until he died in 1972.
Very little was seen of Wallis Simpson after 1972 and she died in 1986. Hundreds of books have been written about her and she remains a very controversial figure in British history.
Our thanks go to Julie who gave us a fascinating insight into the life of Wallis Simpson.
