Memorial halls turns music hall

How, you might ask, do you get a music hall theatre in the Memorial. Well it was all possible thanks to Sarah Peasgood who brought along her exquisitely constructed paper puppet theatre to entertain Glenfield Park W.I Music Hall in miniature. Sarah is passionate about continuing this age old international literary and cultural tradition which was extremely popular at one time in this country and can trace its roots back to medieval times. It reached its heyday in England in Victorian times when people could buy the kits to make a theatre and the actors to populate them. However on the continent, particularly in Holland and Germany, it has never lost its appeal and you can even take a course at university. Sarah has taken part in various festivals in Germany and Holland but has not performed in this country before so we were lucky to see her performance. It was definitely a blast from the past as the likes of Burlington Bertie, Champagne Charlie and Florrie Ford were all raised from the grave for our delectation. Although each performance only lasts about 15 minutes, the actual finished article can take from a fortnight to 6 months to make. It was certainly something different and fascinating, not just the performance but the history we learnt. Not many people know that the actor Peter Baldwin(Coronation Street) was keen to revive and promote the art and Sir Ralph Richardson purchased and brought to life the Pollock Theatre Museum which for many, many years was the place to go to buy all the necessary equipment. We look forward to seeing another of her shows.

Forthcoming events we are looking forward to are: a trip on the canal from Wanlip to Mountsorrel with lunch; afternoon tea; a coffee morning and all our usual monthly groups. Do come and join us. You are assured of a warm welcome.
